You've played or tried to play a long with various great trumpet players including Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen, Bud Brisbois, and many others.

There is an entire world of difference playing a few licks or high notes along with Maynard in your bedroom, garage, or basement compared to stepping out in front of a band WHEN YOU ARE THE SOLOIST!

Most trumpet players do not quite understand this because they have never had the opportunity until NOW!

I chose My Funny Valentine because it is one of Maynard Ferguson's easiest trumpet solos.

Is this solo easy?

No!

However, it is definitely one of Maynard Ferguson's easiest solos bar none!

My Funny Valentine was not written by or for Maynard Ferguson. It's in the public domain. However, to be safe, although this arrangement is very close to the version Maynard played live back in 1953, I have changed some things to make it slightly different so there is no Tom Foolery when it comes to copyright.

To put it simply, this version was inspired by Maynard Ferguson, but this is not him nor is it a copy of his performance. No part of his real performance was used in this backing track!

I have also changed the lead sheet to accommodate most trumpet players. I scratched out Maynard's live solo improv which is much easier than his studio version.

Thus the solo only goes up to a High Eb as long as you take the ending down an octave.

The end result is SOMETHING YOU CAN LEARN AND PLAY!

It is SHOCKING for most players when they play a solo they know, but suddenly are all by themselves...no Maynard helping you along!

It's an "AH HA" type moment that forces even the best players to go back to the woodshed and practice a ton more!
