Stuck in concert band with no idea how to play jazz?

I'm not really sure where to begin. I don't want to invest a lot of money only to find out it isn't for me. I do have this nagging feeling that I am missing out...missing out on a lot of fun!
My range on trumpet is not bad - somewhere around High A to High C right above the staff. Every now and again I can squeak out a High D or so, but I am comfortable only just a few notes above the staff.
I have never played in any large jazz ensemble, big band, or broadway show orchestra.
OR
I have played in jazz bands, big bands, but always 3rd or 4th part...never 1st.
It seems to me that if I could just learn how to play and articulate the style and get comfortable reading jazz and commercial charts, I might actually be pretty good and end up liking playing lead and commercial trumpet.
At first, I just want to try this on my own by studying with a digital video lead trumpet course that I can download and possibly watch on my phone, tablet, or laptop.
I also don't want to be involved in some type of screaming trumpet course...just normal range notes up to High C or so.
I know that should I run into trouble or need help, I can always come back here and easily get one of Kurt's Lesson Packs.
My budget is under $200

I have been around the block and know this is something I don't want to "wing" or D.I.Y. In life, I have found you actually get what you pay for and I am in a position to invest in the best for myself because I really want to do this the right way and take care of business! I am serious about being able to scoot over to the 1st trumpet, lead trumpet part and ....PLAY! Play lead either at our rehearsal and even in a live performance or gig. I AM SERIOUS! ...and I don't want any short-cuts or easy way out. I also don't want to try and teach myself something this complicated.
I would prefer to not become involved in some type of screaming trumpet course...just normal range notes up to High C or so.
My budget is under $500-$700
